In honor of Arbor Day, celebrated this year on April 30, Stellantis donated 160 trees to The Greening of Detroit for a community event. The Greening of Detroit is a volunteer organization empowering the city’s communities to develop healthy green and productive landscapes. The activity supported the company’s commitment to plant 1,100 trees around its new Detroit Assembly Complex – Mack plant.

Detroit has held the “Tree City USA” designation for 33 years and hosting an Arbor Day celebration with tree planting is key to maintaining that distinction. Stellantis’ community service efforts and continued partnership with The Greening of Detroit worked to make this year’s event possible.

A ceremony observing Arbor Day was held at Southeastern High School where the annual Arbor Day Proclamation was recited and guest speakers, including Tom Vallone, Senior Manager for Stellantis Environment, Health and Safety, Joel Howroni Heeres from the Office of Sustainability for the City of Detroit, and Lionel Bradford, President of The Greening of Detroit, shared their thoughts on the importance of trees in creating a sustainable, thriving community.

“Supporting tree plantings is just one of the many initiatives we’ve committed to,” Vallone said.

Following the ceremony, a couple dozen volunteers, including Stellantis employees, Southeastern High School staff and students, and residents got down to the business of planting the trees, beginning with a primer on the proper way to do it from safety steps and basic tool management to tree development and maintenance.
Shovels and rakes were distributed, then the group dug in, planting and watering young trees around the school’s campus. Stellantis is getting closer to its goal to help restore the area’s tree canopy and bring the natural benefits trees bring to an urban environment.
