Sustainable Operations

We know that as we prepare to open our new state-of-the-art assembly plant and bring nearly 5,000 new jobs to Detroit, Stellantis has a great responsibility — and plan — to minimize the environmental impact on the community for this and future generations.

We take this responsibility seriously, which is why we’re proud to say that Mack assembly plant is both the future home of two electrified Jeep® vehicles and one of our most efficient and sustainable manufacturing operations. In fact, this facility has the lowest achievable VOC emission rate of any auto assembly plant in the country and employs the latest in advanced technologies and processes, including:

  • Natural-gas powered Detroit-based semi-truck fleet to haul parts
  • Zero emission hydrogen fuel cell-powered material handling fleet
  • Zero waste-to-landfill manufacturing facility
  • Electric vehicle charging stations
  • Industry-leading water processing and recycling systems
  • Benchmark energy efficiency practices, including planned LEED Certification of the new state-of-the-art paint shop
  • Exclusive use of energy efficient LED lamps (over 6,000) inside and outside the facility

Stellantis Environmental Protection Plan

This document describes the means and processes followed by Stellantis to ensure that all manufacturing operations comply with applicable local, state and federal environmental regulatory requirements, and plant-specific permits, to provide appropriate and required protection to sensitive environmental receptors. The primary means used to ensure appropriate environmental protection is through the execution of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certified, enterprise-wide, Environmental Management System (ISO 14001).

ISO 14001:2015 specifies the requirements for an environmental management system that an organization can use to enhance its environmental performance. ISO 14001:2015 is intended for use by an organization seeking to manage its environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner that contributes to the environmental pillar of sustainability.

ISO 14001:2015 helps an organization achieve the intended outcomes of its environmental management system, which provide value for the environment, the organization itself and interested parties. Consistent with the organization's environmental policy, the intended outcomes of an environmental management system include:

  • enhancement of environmental performance;
  • fulfilment of compliance obligations;
  • achievement of environmental objectives.

Stellantis has established policies and procedures for all environmental compliance aspects which are documented, maintained and implemented through our management system database. The enterprise-wide Management System (Environment, Health, Safety, and Energy “E2HS”) follows the rigorous internal and external accredited auditing requirements to maintain certification.

The Stellantis E2HS management system policy is:

Stellantis is committed to creating a world class environmental, energy, occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system which strives to provide continual improvement, protect the environment, prevent pollution, achieve energy performance improvements, and prevent injury and ill health. Stellantis is committed to:

  • Conforming to applicable compliance obligations related to environmental aspects, OH&S hazards, and energy use, consumption and efficiency.
  • Achieving environmental, OH&S, and energy objectives and targets, including ensuring the availability of information and of necessary resources.
  • Purchasing of energy efficient products and services, and design for energy performance improvement.
  • Practicing sustainability principles.

The E2HS management system includes Stellantis’ North American assembly operations, including body-in-white (welding), painting and assembly operations.

The E2HS management system includes processes and procedures to ensure compliance with specific environmental permits and regulations relevant to the Detroit Assembly Complex, Jefferson and Mack Assembly Plants under the authority of the following governmental agencies:

  • US Environmental Protection Agency
  • Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy
  • Great Lakes Water Authority
  • Detroit Water and Sewerage Department

Additionally, we are investing $1.4 million to mitigate the impact of construction.

  • Installed a stormwater park to control rain water runoff. The park is also available for neighbors to use as a walking path and place to rest. In Spring 2021, gardens, information signage and a large pavilion will be added
  • Created vegetative buffers and bioswales to further minimize stormwater runoff. Bioswales are vegetated areas that naturally filter and slow stormwater runoff to help reduce the impact stormwater can have on a municipal system
  • Reviving the urban tree canopy by planting 1,100 new trees both on our property and within the immediate neighborhood in counsel with arborists and residents
  • Transforming 300 vacant lots into green spaces where once blighted homes stood by planting trees, shrubs and gardens together with community organizations
  • Partnering with the Wildlife Habitat Council to create and support thriving urban biodiversity, pollinator habitats, and on-campus conservation projects
  • Supporting the Chandler Park Conservancy on development of their Education Plaza
  • Hosting ongoing programs, such as “Salmon in the Classroom,” with local schools to build awareness and educate young students on the benefits of environmental stewardship
  • Installing solar-powered bus stop shelters together with the Detroit Department of Transportation, providing residents a well-lit location and available mobile device charging stations
  • Hosting informative environmental events on the benefits of rain barrel capture of stormwater and providing rain barrels to interested residents
  • Establishing a quarterly newsletter to communicate Stellantis-related community activities and environmental initiatives distributed through both digital and printed methods.

Environmental Efforts Support
Six Priority Areas

Stellantis partnered with local community leaders and organizations to listen to concerns, engage them in the decision making, and ensure educational and environmental needs are addressed.

1

Enhance Air Quality

2

Improve Landscape Aesthetics

3

Reduce and Manage Stormwater Impact

4

Support Pollinators and Wildlife Habitats

5

Provide Educational Opportunities

6

Support Pride in the Community

Air Quality Monitoring Station

In early 2020, we worked with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) on an additional projects plan that supplemented our air permit at Mack.

Stellantis is supporting the community’s request for more accurate and reliable data that reflects the air quality on the eastside of Detroit.

  • Stellantis installed a new air monitoring station on the north end of Mack property - between St. Jean and Conner.
  • Data shared quarterly with Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE)

Restoring Detroit’s Tree Canopy

Trees and vegetation soften the infrastructure, reduce noise pollution, and improve aesthetics. We are focusing on native species which support local wildlife and pollinators, provide natural air filtration, reduce stormwater runoff and energy usage, and improve employee and community well-being.

A total of 1,100 trees will be planted in partnership with Greening of Detroit to maximize results of increasing the urban tree canopy.

  • 600 trees on Stellantis property (part of our commitment to mitigate construction)
  • 500 additional trees in the community
    • 300 for lot restorations
    • 200 trees in the neighborhood

Neighborhood Lot Restoration

Newly vacant lots provide areas to improve the green infrastructure, reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality and support pollinators/wildlife. Additionally, numerous studies illustrate the profound health benefits of human exposure to green spaces and instill a sense of community pride.

Within six months of demolitions by the City of Detroit, Stellantis will enhance these city lots through a restoration program including, grass seeding, and tree and shrub planting.

This initiative includes partnerships with local community gardens and organizations like the Riverbend Neighborhood Association, Beniteau Block Club and the Canfield Alliance Network.

Chandler Park Conservancy

In 2020, Chandler Park Conservancy announced the grand opening of their marshland. This marshland can hold over 2.5 million gallons of stormwater while also providing habitat for wildlife.

Later that year, Stellantis announced a $285,000 contribution to the Chandler Park Conservancy that will enable the nonprofit organization to start construction on Detroit's first community-based environmental education plaza.

A total of 1,100 trees will be planted in partnership with Greening of Detroit to maximize results of increasing the urban tree canopy.

  • The investment will provide for the construction of an educational plaza with a shade structure and seating for use by the community and educators to create an outdoor classroom experience
  • Environmental education programing for K-12 students with volunteers
  • Visitors will be able to learn about stormwater management, wildlife habitat, and potentially alternative energy sources

DID YOU KNOW?

Chandler Park will be the first in Detroit to have both a marshland and environmental plaza, and we’re proud to be following their lead, by mimicking plans at our stormwater park on Beniteau Street.

Environmental Enhancements

Natural, sustainable landscaping will be incorporated into areas around the facilities, which minimize stormwater runoff through key infrastructure elements such as bio-swales, retention, and water reuse opportunities.

  • Maintaining stormwater park to control rain water runoff, which is available for use by the neighborhood and features a walking path surrounded by native vegetation, pollinator gardens, informational signage, and an education pavilion (early 2021)
  • Bioswales are vegetated areas that naturally filter and slow stormwater runoff to help reduce the negative impact that stormwater can have on a municipal system
  • Stormwater will be processed through enhanced filtration to enable reuse in production, to reduce water demand and loading on storm system

Traffic Flow Design

Stellantis has also worked with the City of Detroit, and Michigan Department of Transportation to further mitigate traffic flows throughout the area.

  • Partnered with City of Detroit and Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) on a comprehensive traffic impact study
  • Identified mitigation strategies for neighborhood intersections
  • Supported MDOT’s use of an efficient diverging diamond interchange design to satisfy I-94 traffic volume
  • Established fixed preferential routes for I-94, North/South and East/West
  • Helped to secure a $2.8M State of Michigan grant for improvements to Conner

Noise Reduction & Air Quality

  • Noise level reduction efforts include sound barrier wall and strict speed limits within all plant areas
  • Transport truck fleet powered by compressed natural gas (CNG)
  • Smaller, lower emissions trucks used within plant perimeter
  • Stellantis commercial carriers required to be EPA SmartWay certified

Wildlife Habitat

  • Stellantis will create wildlife and pollinator habitats to ensure local availability of key natural resources through a partnership with the Wildlife Habitat Council
  • Obtain Wildlife Conservation Certification through the Wildlife Habitat Council, holding Stellantis accountable for habitat improvement
  • Partner with the Wildlife Habitat Council to develop conservation projects on-site and within the neighborhood that will benefit the area’s natural and social environment
