We take this responsibility seriously, which is why we’re proud to say that Mack assembly plant is both the future home of two electrified Jeep® vehicles and one of our most efficient and sustainable manufacturing operations. In fact, this facility has the lowest achievable VOC emission rate of any auto assembly plant in the country and employs the latest in advanced technologies and processes, including:
This document describes the means and processes followed by Stellantis to ensure that all manufacturing operations comply with applicable local, state and federal environmental regulatory requirements, and plant-specific permits, to provide appropriate and required protection to sensitive environmental receptors. The primary means used to ensure appropriate environmental protection is through the execution of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certified, enterprise-wide, Environmental Management System (ISO 14001).
ISO 14001:2015 specifies the requirements for an environmental management system that an organization can use to enhance its environmental performance. ISO 14001:2015 is intended for use by an organization seeking to manage its environmental responsibilities in a systematic manner that contributes to the environmental pillar of sustainability.
ISO 14001:2015 helps an organization achieve the intended outcomes of its environmental management system, which provide value for the environment, the organization itself and interested parties. Consistent with the organization's environmental policy, the intended outcomes of an environmental management system include:
Stellantis has established policies and procedures for all environmental compliance aspects which are documented, maintained and implemented through our management system database. The enterprise-wide Management System (Environment, Health, Safety, and Energy “E2HS”) follows the rigorous internal and external accredited auditing requirements to maintain certification.
The Stellantis E2HS management system policy is:
Stellantis is committed to creating a world class environmental, energy, occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system which strives to provide continual improvement, protect the environment, prevent pollution, achieve energy performance improvements, and prevent injury and ill health. Stellantis is committed to:
The E2HS management system includes Stellantis’ North American assembly operations, including body-in-white (welding), painting and assembly operations.
The E2HS management system includes processes and procedures to ensure compliance with specific environmental permits and regulations relevant to the Detroit Assembly Complex, Jefferson and Mack Assembly Plants under the authority of the following governmental agencies:
In early 2020, we worked with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) on an additional projects plan that supplemented our air permit at Mack.
Stellantis is supporting the community’s request for more accurate and reliable data that reflects the air quality on the eastside of Detroit.
Trees and vegetation soften the infrastructure, reduce noise pollution, and improve aesthetics. We are focusing on native species which support local wildlife and pollinators, provide natural air filtration, reduce stormwater runoff and energy usage, and improve employee and community well-being.
A total of 1,100 trees will be planted in partnership with Greening of Detroit to maximize results of increasing the urban tree canopy.
Newly vacant lots provide areas to improve the green infrastructure, reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality and support pollinators/wildlife. Additionally, numerous studies illustrate the profound health benefits of human exposure to green spaces and instill a sense of community pride.
Within six months of demolitions by the City of Detroit, Stellantis will enhance these city lots through a restoration program including, grass seeding, and tree and shrub planting.
This initiative includes partnerships with local community gardens and organizations like the Riverbend Neighborhood Association, Beniteau Block Club and the Canfield Alliance Network.
In 2020, Chandler Park Conservancy announced the grand opening of their marshland. This marshland can hold over 2.5 million gallons of stormwater while also providing habitat for wildlife.
Later that year, Stellantis announced a $285,000 contribution to the Chandler Park Conservancy that will enable the nonprofit organization to start construction on Detroit's first community-based environmental education plaza.
A total of 1,100 trees will be planted in partnership with Greening of Detroit to maximize results of increasing the urban tree canopy.
DID YOU KNOW?
Chandler Park will be the first in Detroit to have both a marshland and environmental plaza, and we’re proud to be following their lead, by mimicking plans at our stormwater park on Beniteau Street.
Natural, sustainable landscaping will be incorporated into areas around the facilities, which minimize stormwater runoff through key infrastructure elements such as bio-swales, retention, and water reuse opportunities.
Stellantis has also worked with the City of Detroit, and Michigan Department of Transportation to further mitigate traffic flows throughout the area.
